If you are reading this I hope you have already read, asked, and answered the 3 questions in my previous post but, in case you haven’t, I will quickly review them because your answers to these 3 questions will be the launching point for the 5 simple actions I will be discussing in this post. So start by asking yourself…
- Why? Why do I want to pursue this dream?
- What? What would I be giving up by not pursuing it?
- When? When will I decide?
Answering these 3 questions can be critical in helping you to get unstuck in your pursuit of your dream here’s why…
You will either find that your “WHY” is strong enough to provide the motivation you need to move forward leaving you with the question of “WHEN”. When will you move forward or give up the pursuit altogether? Leaving you will the question of “WHAT”. What will I be giving up? If you can live with the answer to what you will be giving up by not continuing the pursuit than clearly your “WHY” is not strong enough. A possible answer to the question above, why you might be stuck?
If you have answered these three questions and have made a decision to move forward, give yourself a little LOVE because it took some work to get here! How do I know because I have walked it myself? Does this mean you won’t have challenges ahead, of course not? It simply means you have now made a decision to move forward and will have an opportunity to experience some of these challenges. Yes, I know it’s probably not what you want to hear after you make a big decision to move forward in the pursuit of your big dream, but if I had to guess I bet you have already thought through all the challenges ahead; I know I did.
So, now that you have made a decision to move forward you are now ready to embrace these 5 simple actions that can help you accomplish your dreams.
1. CELEBRATE YOUR DECISION
Take time to celebrate your decision. Some people will never make it to this point. In the book “If” Trading Your If Only Regrets for God’s What If Possibilities by Mark Batterson he says in the first half of our life we tend to regret the things we do, but the second half of our lives we regret the things we didn’t do. You know the dreams we never pursued like owning a business, writing a book, launch a website, founding a charity to name a few. It’s never too late to pick it back up and go for it!
You might be reading this and thinking, well you don’t know my situation. You’re right, I don’t, but I do know this, anytime you consider changing your course in life you’re more than likely going to have to face some obstacles. I know because I have done it. In our blog Strive to Live a Life You Love we talk about our personal story and some of the struggles we have had to face and overcome pursuing our dream of living a life we love. So, I will say it again, if you have made it this far CELEBRATE!!
Telling others may be a little more difficult than you think. It’s one thing to make the decision and keep it to ourselves, but when we start telling others it may bring some new challenges; like explaining to everyone exactly what you are doing. I would have rather made my decisions and work on developing it without telling anyone, but telling others not only hold us more accountable but solidifies our decision helping us to stay the course.
3. FIND SUPPORT
Finding my support is one of the five actions that has helped me the most. Find your cheerleaders! You know they ones that believe in you when no one else does. They will stand next to you and cheer you on when you feel like giving up. Believe me, there will be plenty of people around you that gave up on their dreams that will be happy to talk you out of yours that’s why it is so important to find your supporters!
Connect with others pursuing similar dreams online. There are thousands of online groups and the first place I would look is Facebook Groups.
4. TAKE COURAGE
Taking courage is not an option it is a necessity. You will not go far if you don’t do this. Remember courage is not the absence of fear but the ability to continue in spite of fear! This is the reason your “WHY” is so important. The reason why you are pursuing this dream must be significant enough for you to take up courage and face your fears. There are few that will leave their comfort zone without facing fear. The fear that you come up against when pursuing your dream can be paralyzing but if you take up courage you can move forward in the face of it.
5. EMBRACE DISCOMFORT
Embrace the discomfort of being out of your comfort zone. The further you move away from your comfort zone the more uncomfortable you will feel. In Bruce Wilkinson’s book, The Dream Giver, he says sometimes we believe that if we are afraid while pursuing our dream that it may be a signal that it is something we are not to pursue, but the truth is that is not true. Being afraid will always be a part of pursuing any big dream. Fear will likely be present when you are doing things you have never done before.
So the best advice we could give you is to just embrace is as part of your journey! I promise it will be worth it. We have both pursued goals of some pretty big dreams that were scary, but embracing these 5 actions help us to achieve them all.
I hope this has encouraged you to keep moving forward in your pursuit!
